THE SURVIVAL OF ST. JOAN 1970
Before there was Godspell, Stephen Schwartz had a Broadway debut with The Survival of St. Joan, a musical based on the mythical rumor that Joan had survived the stake. It was produced by Haila Stoddard, a soap opera star for 20 years (she was very fearful of the skull imagery), and starred Gretchen Corbett as Joan, a friend from Carnegie Mellon, who went on to be Jim Rockford's attorney in the long-running Rockford Files. This was a big time for Rock Operas, and all I can remember about this one was St. Joan's spectacular ascendency to Heaven (or the Anderson Theatre flies) with much guitar music, strobe lights and smoke.
