Dobby is a house-elf belonging to the Malfoys that causes much trouble for Harry Potter at first, but grows to like him, and warns him not to go back to Hogwarts. A house-elf can only be freed if someone gives him a piece of clothing—in this story it is one of Harry’s dirty socks that does the deed. Dobby appears again in subsequent Potter tales.
